Watering a newly planted tree correctly in the first few years is the single biggest factor in whether it thrives, just survives, or dies. Traditional watering methods can be very time consuming and lead to procrastination and neglect, and the tree pays for it with weak, surface-level roots that can't anchor the tree or access deep soil moisture during drought.

Why Deep Root Watering Matters

Tree roots follow water. When you water at the surface — with a sprinkler or a quick hose spray — roots stay shallow because that's where the moisture is. Shallow roots mean:

  • Dependence on frequent irrigation rather than natural rainfall

How Often to Water a Newly Planted Tree

A general rule of thumb for newly planted trees:

  • Weeks 3–12: Water every 3–4 days, allowing the soil to partially dry between sessions. This encourages roots to reach outward and downward.
  • After 3 months: Transition to once or twice per week, depending on rainfall and soil type. Sandy soils drain faster and need more frequent watering; clay soils retain moisture longer.

Always check soil moisture 4–6 inches below the surface before watering. If it's still damp, wait. Overwatering is just as harmful as underwatering — it suffocates roots and promotes fungal disease.

Where to Water

New trees should be watered in the root well just outside the root ball — not at the trunk. This is where the feeder roots are actively growing. Watering at the trunk can cause crown rot and does little to encourage outward root expansion.

As the tree matures, gradually move your watering point outward to follow the expanding drip line.

How Much Water Does a New Tree Need?

A commonly cited guideline is 10 gallons per inch of trunk diameter per watering session. We aren't saying that is wrong, but its assuming surface watering which requires more than direct to root applications. 

We know that a gallon of water will completely soak 1 cubic foot of soil. Small and medium sized trees (up to 10 feet) will typically need a root well of 24" wide and 18" deep, which is 5 cubic feet. Conveniently, the requirement for a full soak is about 5 gallons.
